Night One: The World You Are In

2 min read

Tonight you are not going to change anything. You are going to find out where you live.

Not the address on your mail. The place your attention returns to when nobody is steering it. Every mind has such a place. Loosen your grip on the wheel for thirty seconds, in the shower, at a red light, in the pause before sleep, and the mind goes somewhere on its own, the way a horse walks home. Wherever it goes without being sent, that is where you have been dwelling. That is the world you are actually living in, whatever world your feet are standing in.

Most people have never once observed this honestly. They know what they think about when they choose to think. They have no idea where they go when they stop choosing, and the difference between those two places is nearly the whole story of why their lives feel stuck.

In Veilurgy, this matters more than any technique, because where you dwell here is where you land there. Before you can leave the Waiting World, you have to catch yourself living in it.

Tonight's work

Three times before you sleep, catch your mind unattended. Set no alarm; just notice when you surface from a drift, and instead of moving on, ask one question: where was I just now? Name it plainly. Not "thinking about work" but the actual scene: rehearsing the conversation, checking whether the feeling has changed, replaying the message that did not come.

Before sleep, write the three places down. One line each. That is the whole of it.

What not to force

Do not fix anything tonight. Do not judge the places you find, and do not try to steer the mind somewhere better; that is a different night's work, and doing it now will only teach your attention to hide from you. A watched anchor sinks quietly. You are a surveyor this evening, not a builder.

Where does my mind go when I stop sending it anywhere?
