Night Six: The Crossing

2 min read

Six nights of preparation come to a point tonight: one calm attempt.

Hold the word calm. Not a vigil, not an ordeal, not a heroic effort at the edge of exhaustion. This practice asks for nothing dangerous and nothing extreme, no sleep deprivation, no fasting, no substances, no forced breathing. Everything you need tonight is a quiet room and the ordinary approach of sleep. The full method is in the Grimoire, in The Meditation and Crossing in Dreams; tonight is the gentlest version of the second road.

The attempt has three turns, and you know them all already.

First, leave this world behind: whatever the day left in you, and above all the anchor, set it down on the floor beside the bed. You cannot serve two kingdoms, and you may pick everything back up in the morning.

Second, let the desire rise and speak plainly, in your words or in mine: I want to see beyond this world. I wish to cross, to see what is true.

Third, let the desire become belief. Begin to believe you are crossing, and then stop pushing, and let the believing come over you the way sleep itself comes, which is to say: only when you stop chasing it. Slow the world down first if it helps. Something dull on the television, a puzzle, slow breathing. You are letting this world run down like a music box, and setting the intent at the threshold, and letting go of it there.

Tonight's work

Exactly what is written above, once, at your normal bedtime, and then let sleep take you. That is the whole of the work. If you wake in the night, do not seize the machinery and try again with effort; rest the intent on the surface of your mind and drift.

What not to force

The result. Hear this before you begin: most first attempts meet ordinary sleep and ordinary dreams, and that is not failure, it is the first knock on a door that has been shut a long time. Do not stack attempt on attempt through the night, and do not wake disappointed; disappointment is proof-checking, and you know now which world that builds. The answer, always, is not a cleverer technique. It is desire, fed patiently, night after ordinary night.

Can I make the attempt and then genuinely let the night be whatever it is?
